Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicle Test Proceedure

The new emissions testing regime which has already been introduced for cars is conducted under conditions defined by EU law and is used to measure fuel consumption and CO2 emissions from vehicles as well as their pollutant emissions, this is based on real-driving data and replaces the outdated New European Driving Cycle (NEDC) test based on lab tests.

WLTP for vans

Now this more stringent testing will now be applied to vans, with all new vans having to comply with stricter emissions and pollution standards by September 2019. As a result of this, Volkswagen vans have invested no fewer the 6 million Euros in a new fully-equipped emissions testing facility at their site in Hannover, Germany. With Volkswagen vans aiming to ensure that their van range won’t suffer the same ordeal as their new car range.

The brand new test centre for Volkswagen vans will not only be used for type approval of every one of the brand’s vehicles, it will also check the vehicles that the company has in production on a continuous basis.

Outstanding precision

Emissions Test Centre Manager, Metin Karsak outlined on the importance of the new test facility, commenting: ”The new building and cutting-edge equipment installed in it enable us to reproduce the required test cycles with outstanding precision.”

What does the emission testing facility have?

The new facility features two test beds which will be used by 15 staff on a two-shift basis, in addition to these a key element of the new facility is a master control station, which monitors all tests and cycle phases. Inside a room which is clean, the particulate output of each vehicle tested is weighed on a precision scales which is vibration-free (precise to 0.001 milligram). In order to keep vibrations under control, they sit on a cost-iron, 500 kilogram base which is filled with concreate and a spring-cushioned 20 centimetres thick granite slab. In the room, the temperature is 22 degrees Celsius with 45 percent air humidity.
