Tesla founder Elon Musk has hinted at the possibility of teaming up with Mercedes-Benz vans and the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter to develop their own electric van.

Tesla electric van

Tesla founder Elon Musk is renowned for speculative posts on Twitter (or Tweets) with the latest hinting at the possibility of Tesla linking up with none other than Mercedes-Benz vans to develop a new electric van. This may be a difficult concept for some to picture, with Mercedes-Benz vans already having an electric Mercedes-Benz Sprinter van set to launch in 2019 badged the Mercedes-Benz eSprinter.

Musk however has hinted of the possibility of sourcing what he labelled ’glider’ versions of the eSprinter. These models would essentially be rolling shells of the van, so wouldn’t feature any of the batteries, computers or electric motors present in the eSprinter. Tesla would then outfit these shells with Tesla technology to develop their new electric van.
Tesla and Mercedes-Benz have a history of working together. In 2009, Daimler attained a 10 percent stake in Tesla following a staggering $50 million investment, Musk himself has credited this move as the saving grace for Tesla, the brand has also provided motors and batteries for the electric Mercedes B-Class.

It appears that an electric Tesla van is unlikely to be in production anytime soon, with Mercedes-Benz and Tesla going their separate ways in 2014, with the German brand opting to sell all of their remaining shares after recognizing that Tesla were a competitor in the electric vehicle market. There’s also a backlog of projects that Tesla wishes to complete before taking on an electric van project, with Musk revealing the brand’s list of priorities: ”Our priority list is Model Y, solar roof tiles, pick-up, semi, Roadster.”
