Vauxhall’s Combo is a long way from being in its first flush of youth and the age of its design is showing now in a number of areas. It still has some advantages, however, not the least of them being its sensibly shaped 2.8m3 cargo bay and payload capacities ranging from 572kg to 803kg depending on which model you pick.

Its diesel engines are pretty good too, especially the fuel-frugal low-CO2 1.3-litre CDTi with 75hp/170Nm on tap. The alternative is a 1.7-litre CDTi diesel supplying 100hp/240Nm. A 1.4-litre 90hp/125Nm petrol lump is on offer too. A five-speed manual gearbox is standard across the range with a five-speed Easytronic automated manual ’box available on the 1.3-litre as an extra-cost option.

Vauxhall has attempted to inject some excitement into the Combo range — a tall order if ever there was one — with the SE variant. It gets sports seats, 15in alloy wheels, a sliding nearside cargo area door and body-colour front and rear quarter bumpers and mirrors. There's also a very competitively priced entry level Expression model.

Combo is protected by a three-year/60,000 mile warranty and service intervals are set at 20,000 miles.
