Vans A2Z.com Verdict A good package that’s unlikely to disappoint. Due for replacement some time in 2011. Pick-ups dominate the light commercial sector in the USA and Ford’s F-150 has been a best-seller over there for many a long year. Over here pick-ups are bit-part players by comparison, but that hasn’t stopped the Big Blue Oval competing in the sector. Its current offering is the made-in-Thailand Ranger. Last year it received a mild makeover, with a redesigned front grille plus big headlamps that wrap around each corner. The makeover also involved the dropping of the, rather tail-happy, 3.0-litre 156hp/380Nm Duratorq TDCi diesel automatic from the line-up. An automatic is still up for grabs, but solely in conjunction with Ranger’s 2.5-litre 143hp/330Nm Duratorq TDCi diesel. The 2.5-litre is also available with a five-speed manual gearbox. The 3.0-litre can still be specified too, but solely with a manual shift. On offer as a 4x2 or with selective four wheel-drive, Ranger is marketed with four different specification levels; XL, XLT, Thunder and the range-topping Wildtrak. You can order the vehicle with a two-door Regular Cab, an extended Super Cab with two half-width rear-hinged doors, or as a four-door Double Cab. Maximum payload capacity across the range runs from 900kg to 1,235kg. Ranger is remarkably competent off-road, however, in part thanks to the suspension’s generous articulation. Service intervals are set at 12,500 miles while Ranger is covered by a three-year/60,000-mile warranty.
