While the original Peugeot Expert was up for grabs with just one size of cargo area, its successor boasts a lot more choice. Today’s offering can be ordered with a 5.0m3 load box if you specify the short-wheelbase standard roof version. If you need a bit more space then you can opt for the long-wheelbase standard roof — it’ll provide you with 6.0m3 — while the long-wheelbase high roof gives you 7.0m3 to play with. Payload capacity extends from 1,000kg to 1,200kg and loading is made easy thanks to a sliding side door on each side of the body. Under the bonnet you’ll find either a 1.6-litre or a 2.0-litre HDi diesel. The former generates 90hp/180Nm and is married to a five-speed manual gearbox while its stablemate produces either 120hp/300Nm or 136hp/320Nm and is hooked up to a six-speed manual ’box. ABS is standard as is Emergency Brake Assistance. Cab access is little short of excellent. A low floor means that there’s no step up and the seat is set at just the right height for drivers who are obliged to jump in and out of the cab all the time during the course of their daily work. As for performance, pick either of the 2.0-litres if you’re on long distance high speed runs. The 1.6-litre can struggle a little in that sort of environment. However, it is fine around town and the feedback offered by its hydraulic power steering is preferable to what’s on offer from the electro-hydraulic set-up fitted to the other models in the range. Expert comes with a 3-year/100,000-mile warranty and service intervals are set at 20,000 miles/2 yrs. As well as a panel van it is also marketed as a window van and a platform cab.
