Emanating from a long-standing joint venture between Fiat and the PSA Group, Peugeot and Citroën’s parent company, Peugeot’s Boxer is identical to Citroën’s Relay and Fiat Ducato in its basic design. Power is provided by two different diesels; a 2.2-litre at either 100hp/250Nm or 120hp/320Nm and a 3.0-litre at 157hp/400Nm. In passing it’s worth noting that Ducato employs a 120hp/320Nm 2.3-litre diesel rather than the more powerful of the 2.2-litres. The 100hp 2.2-litre is married to a five-speed gearbox while the front-wheel drive Boxer’s other two powerplants are hooked up to a six-speeder. Van load cube extends from 8.0m3 to an enourmous 17.0m3 while payload capacities run from 1,100kg to 1,900kg. Gross weights reach from 3.0 tonnes all the way up to 4.0 tonnes. Boxer comes with a distinctively styled cab interior. Plus points include lots of storage space for all the oddments that drivers have to haul around with them plus a praiseworthy driving position. While the 120hp 2.2-litre is a willing-enough engine, the Ducato’s 2.3-litre probably has the edge over it when it comes to liveliness and driving enjoyment. The 3.0-litre offers oodles of power effortlessly and makes high-speed motorway dashes a breeze while the 100hp 2.2-litre is fine for round-the-town stop-start delivery runs. We’ve no serious quarrels with the handling, but the unladen ride can be nervous and noise levels could stand to be better suppressed. Boxer is covered by a three-year/100,000-mile warranty and service intervals are set at 2yrs/24,000 miles. Boxer is marketed with a variety of different special conversions and can be ordered as a window van, a dropside, a tipper, a Luton and a minibus.
