Perceived as being as British as fish and chips, a pint of bitter and the Union Jack, even though much of the production emanates from Turkey these days, Ford’s Transit is a transport icon everywhere from Lands End to John O’Groats. No matter whereabouts in the country you buy one, you won’t be able to complain about a lack of choice. With load cubes ranging from 6.1m3 to 14.3m3, Transit van is up for grabs with four different lengths and three different roof heights. Gross weights range from 2,600kg to 4,600kg while payload capacities run from 793kg to 2,265kg.

Transit is unusual, though not unique these days, in being available with a choice of either front- or rear-wheel drive. You can opt for a low ride height all-wheel drive Transit too. Choose front-wheel drive and you get a 2.2-litre diesel on offer at 85hp/250Nm, 115hp/300Nm or 140hp/350Nm. Rear-wheel drive variants take a 2.4-litre diesel at 100hp/285Nm, 115hp/310Nm or 140hp/375Nm, a 3.2-litre diesel on offer at 200hp/470Nm or a 2.3-litre petrol lump with 145hp/210Nm. The 140hp 2.4-litre is also employed in the all-wheel drive variant.

You get a five- or a six-speed manual gearbox depending on which model you choose. Transit is not available with an automatic or a semi-automatic gearbox, but Electronic Stability Programme is fitted as standard on virtually all versions; a huge point in its favour.

Three trim levels are available; base, Trend and Limited. Frugal low-CO2-emission ECOnetic versions of Transit should help save the planet and be kind to your wallet while SportVan Transit provides the fun.

Service intervals across the range are typically set at 15,000 miles and Transit is covered by a three-year/100,000-mile warranty.
